A ‘Magician of the Brush’: The Many Lives of Robin Philipson
a talk by Elizabeth Cumming
We are delighted to announce a free event for SSAH members. An illustrated talk about the leading modern Scottish artist Sir Robin Philipson (1916-92), by Elizabeth Cumming, will be held online at 6.30pm on Tuesday 23 November 2021.
As a painter, art school teacher, and the President of the Royal Scottish Academy for two decades, Sir Robin Philipson (1916-92) played a central role in the development of the Edinburgh School. In this talk, distinguished art historian Elizabeth Cumming will discuss the range of his achievements and ask if he may be regarded as a modernist.
Elizabeth Cumming is an Honorary Professor in the history of art at Edinburgh University and is a longstanding supporter of the SSAH. She got to know Sir Robin as curator of the Edinburgh City Art Centre in the 1980s, and her monograph on him was published by Sansom in 2018.
This event is a chance for us to get together online in the more friendly ‘Zoom meeting’ format. Questions and discussion are welcome.
A link to book a free ticket on Eventbrite will be emailed to SSAH members. To become a member, please see the ‘How to join‘ section on this website.
Booking will close at 6.30 pm on Monday 22 November 2021. Thereafter, members are welcome to email SSAH committee member Alice Strang on firstname.lastname@example.org to receive the link to attend. Indeed, Alice is happy to answer any questions you may have about the event.
